- 07:38:02 [HairMetalAddict]
- The Swedish itself looks okay. Can't say I know the artist.
- 07:43:35 [nikki_]
- hmm.
- 07:43:56 [nikki_]
- just forty more open add albums on my subscribed artists and one other open edit to vote on
- 07:44:03 [nikki_]
- impressive.

- hello
- 08:39:10 [keschte]
- hi
- 08:39:22 [[TeSeO]]
- i want to ask something if anybody could help me
- 08:39:34 [[TeSeO]]
- i have downloaded and properly installed the musicbrainz database
- 08:39:49 [[TeSeO]]
- but i dont know how to update it
- 08:39:57 [[TeSeO]]
- whenever they release a new version
- 08:40:22 [[TeSeO]]
- is there any way apart of download the whole dta base and start the installation from the begining?
- 08:40:49 [keschte]
- yes, wait a second
- 08:41:02 [[TeSeO]]
- keschte: cheers mate
- 08:41:08 [keschte]
- 08:41:27 [keschte]
- its only the database you are interested in, not the server, right?
- 08:41:37 [[TeSeO]]
- exactly
- 08:42:13 [luks]
- set database type to RT_SLAVE and run `perl admin/replication/LoadReplicationChanges`
- 08:42:37 [keschte]
- 08:42:55 [luks]
- keschte: he already have the db installed
- 08:43:35 [[TeSeO]]
- yes, and thanks to the people of this channel by the way :)
- 08:43:45 [keschte]
- keyword was: start the installation from the beginning :)
- 08:44:04 [keschte]
- it might be too early for me, though
- 08:44:24 [[TeSeO]]
- otherwise i would be stuck on the cvs server that in mb web sites talks about in the how to's
- 08:44:52 [luks]
- just change "sub REPLICATION_TYPE { RT_STANDALONE }" in cgi-bin/DBDefs.pm to "sub REPLICATION_TYPE { RT_SLAVE }"
- 08:45:03 [luks]
- and then run the script to load changes
- 08:45:26 [luks]
- ideally add it to cron, so it will update itself automatically
- 08:45:44 [[TeSeO]]
- yes that's my plan actually
- 08:46:22 [[TeSeO]]
- and it will update
- 08:46:33 [[TeSeO]]
- the whole database? i'm using the big file
- 08:46:41 [[TeSeO]]
- and two of the others
- 08:46:45 [[TeSeO]]
- to have the covers and stuff
- 08:47:13 [[TeSeO]]
- not using the moderators and searches because the users will be spanish speakers and will not use that cache
- 08:47:22 [[TeSeO]]
- so is the only thing useless for me
- 08:47:30 [luks]
- there are small packets of changes produced each hour
- 08:47:36 [luks]
- it will download only those
- 08:47:51 [[TeSeO]]
- will update album_asin_amazon table for example?
- 08:47:59 [[TeSeO]]
- ah, oke so it will check
- 08:48:12 [[TeSeO]]
- if what i have is updated and if not, it will download it
- 08:48:24 [luks]
- i don't know. i think the packets include data from mbdump.tar.bz2 and mbdump-derived.tar.bz2
- 08:48:39 [[TeSeO]]
- yes, the derived one is what i needed
- 08:48:48 [[TeSeO]]
- you know is where the covers come from
- 08:49:06 [[TeSeO]]
- luks i really appreciate your help, you did it a lot
- 08:49:18 [keschte]
- sorry i didn't :)
- 08:49:20 [[TeSeO]]
- this is real open source community
- 08:49:31 [[TeSeO]]
- keschte, you too mate
- 08:49:49 [[TeSeO]]
- at least is not the tipical irc channels that people is muted and ignores you
- 08:49:56 [luks]
- what are you going to do with the database, btw?
- 08:50:31 [[TeSeO]]
- at the moment
- 08:50:40 [[TeSeO]]
- i'm gonna put the info
- 08:50:45 [[TeSeO]]
- online
- 08:50:51 [[TeSeO]]
- and try to position it
- 08:50:53 [[TeSeO]]
- in google
- 08:51:07 [[TeSeO]]
- for the people to talk about the songs , albums, artist and stuff
- 08:51:25 [[TeSeO]]
- e.g: you go to a contact website and go to music section
- 08:51:46 [[TeSeO]]
- and people vote and talk about an album, and also you can add new reviews for a musician, etc
- 08:53:23 [keschte]
- hmm...
- 08:53:40 [keschte]
- luks, you remember the subjective content thingie that was started a couple of months ago
- 08:53:59 [keschte]
- nothing happened in that perspective, but we'd be interested to have this directly in mb
- 08:54:11 [keschte]
- to have some more community value than just collecting data
- 08:58:01 [Rondom_]
- Rondom_ is now known as Rondom
- 09:00:09 [[TeSeO]]
- by the way, where you guys from?:-)
- 09:00:30 [[TeSeO]]
- as how i speak english, you can notice i'm not. I'm spanish
- 09:01:32 [keschte]
- i'm .ch
- 09:04:55 [keschte]
- your english is fine :)
- 09:07:29 [luks]
- keschte: hm, subjective content thingie?
- 09:08:38 [mustaqila]
- mustaqila has joined #musicbrainz
- 09:09:42 [keschte]
- there was a discussion about adding another wiki for reviews
- 09:09:49 [luks]
- ah
- 09:10:01 [keschte]
- but as things go around here, it trickled away
- 09:10:23 [keschte]
- [TeSeO]: is there a business aspect to your project?
- 09:10:38 [[TeSeO]]
- no
- 09:11:03 [keschte]
- we are *really* short on coders, and there are so many features we'd like to develop.
- 09:11:08 [keschte]
- maybe you could help out?
- 09:11:46 [[TeSeO]]
- what exactly are you looking for?
- 09:11:52 [keschte]
- i remember that indexing the database by google was discussed too, but it was taxed too heavy for the database at the time
- 09:12:11 [keschte]
- have you started working on these community features yet?
- 09:12:12 [UPnetworks]
- UPnetworks has quit
- 09:12:29 [[TeSeO]]
- i had no idea there was people working on it
- 09:12:36 [[TeSeO]]
- aw sorry
- 09:12:41 [[TeSeO]]
- id didnt get it
- 09:12:54 [[TeSeO]]
- i can see
- 09:12:57 [[TeSeO]]
- that the database
- 09:12:57 [keschte]
- no, there aren't.
- 09:13:01 [Synchro]

- has a *problem*
- 09:13:09 [UPnetworks]
- UPnetworks has joined #musicbrainz
- 09:13:14 [[TeSeO]]
- and is that field
- 09:13:18 [[TeSeO]]
- called gid
- 09:13:29 [[TeSeO]]
- which i dont know exactly for what it is
- 09:13:40 [keschte]
- its a unique identifier of an entity
- 09:13:48 [keschte]
- ./artist/gid.html for instance
- 09:13:57 [[TeSeO]]
- but i see that is used to make the url
- 09:14:05 [[TeSeO]]
- buta that id is the id field as well?
- 09:14:10 [keschte]
- until just now, they were lost after a merge, but not anymore
- 09:14:18 [[TeSeO]]
- i think
- 09:14:21 [[TeSeO]]
- that gid
- 09:14:40 [keschte]
- the integer id is supposed to be the internal value and not used to link from outside
- 09:14:54 [[TeSeO]]
- yes exactly
- 09:14:58 [[TeSeO]]
- that gid field
- 09:15:06 [[TeSeO]]
- might be a link
- 09:15:14 [[TeSeO]]
- like this
- 09:16:02 [[TeSeO]]
- 09:16:04 [[TeSeO]]
- you see?
- 09:16:09 [[TeSeO]]
- the keywords are in the url
- 09:16:19 [[TeSeO]]
- in this case they dont use the internal id
- 09:16:20 [[TeSeO]]
- but normally
- 09:16:25 [[TeSeO]]
- using rewrite mode and regex
- 09:16:27 [[TeSeO]]
- you can have
- 09:16:32 [[TeSeO]]
- 09:16:52 [[TeSeO]]
- and it is like if you put http://www.lyricstime.com/song.php?id=58778
- 09:17:00 [luks]
- it's not very useful for mb to have keywords in the url
- 09:17:04 [keschte]
- yea
- 09:17:07 [[TeSeO]]
- why?
- 09:17:11 [luks]
- currently it isn't even indexed by google
- 09:17:31 [[TeSeO]]
- is very usefull to have the keywords in the url
- 09:17:33 [[TeSeO]]
- in fact
- 09:17:37 [[TeSeO]]
- if you just use
- 09:17:44 [[TeSeO]]
- the field name
- 09:17:53 [luks]
- this is how MB links should looke like: http://musicbrainz.org/artist/4a4ee089-93b1-4470-af9a-6ff575d32704.html
- 09:17:55 [[TeSeO]]
- what you have in there
- 09:18:00 [luks]
- where the "4a4ee089-93b1-4470-af9a-6ff575d32704" part is permanent
- 09:18:03 [luks]
- and will never change
- 09:18:20 [keschte]
- i'm not really fond of the GUIDs from a useabilty perspective
- 09:18:33 [keschte]
- i proposed to have additional links like /artist/Pink+Floyd
- 09:18:36 [[TeSeO]]
- if you use this, then you are wasting positive things with google
- 09:18:40 [[TeSeO]]
- exactly
- 09:18:44 [keschte]
- but this messes with the service aspect (webservices) of mb
- 09:18:49 [[TeSeO]]
- no
- 09:19:06 [[TeSeO]]
- is just substitute the gid for the new gid, using what the field name has
- 09:19:13 [[TeSeO]]
- but no spaces, just -
- 09:19:24 [luks]
- the problem in names in URLs, is that names change
- 09:19:28 [[TeSeO]]
- if name is Guns and roses -> gid would be guns-and-roses
- 09:19:39 [keschte]
- dumb question, how is the system supposed to know where the artist ends and the release name starts? :-)
- 09:20:01 [[TeSeO]]
- because
- 09:20:06 [[TeSeO]]
- what is really important
- 09:20:13 [[TeSeO]]
- is the unique integer id
- 09:20:16 [keschte]
- and urls are not supposed to be changeable by edits made against the entities, thats why :)
- 09:20:34 [keschte]
- no, exactly the opposite.
- 09:20:45 [keschte]
- the guid is permanant, and the rowid can change.
- 09:20:52 [HairMetalAddict]
- Then you've got to deal with 10 different artists having the same name, non-English characters, and all sorts of other such fun.
- 09:21:06 [keschte]
- we have now a mapping in place that will map 0..n albums merged into another to the guid of the destination album
- 09:21:17 [luks]
- just look at wikipedia, they have to use "Foo (XYZ album)" hacks
- 09:21:18 [HairMetalAddict]
- Along with, yes, artist names change sometime, making the links non-permanent
- 09:21:20 [keschte]
- (or we will) :)
- 09:21:28 [[TeSeO]]
- HairMetalAddict, the dealing is solve just taking the id, the links is just google work
- 09:21:52 [[TeSeO]]
- if there are two bands called pink floyd
- 09:22:00 [keschte]
- if we remove the robots.txt line preventing bots to index the site, it will index the guid's just fine
- 09:22:05 [keschte]
- its the page content that counts
- 09:22:08 [HairMetalAddict]
- yep
- 09:22:28 [[TeSeO]]
- is just a positive thing that is not being used
- 09:22:36 [keschte]
- on the other hand, your argument is for human readable (and more important, rememberable) urls
- 09:22:36 [[TeSeO]]
- the keywords in da url
- 09:22:49 [[TeSeO]]
- exactly
- 09:22:53 [keschte]
- i for one cannot keep a guid in memory :D
- 09:22:53 [[TeSeO]]
- basicly
- 09:22:57 [HairMetalAddict]
- Google knows link URLs are used by SEOs to try and get higher result ranking, and ignores them.
- 09:23:10 [[TeSeO]]
- HairMetalAddict, you are totally confused about that
- 09:23:24 [[TeSeO]]
- as i work on seo and google LOVES friendly urls
- 09:23:50 [HairMetalAddict]
- That's from the mouth of a Google staff, at a SEO conference that I *spoke* at.
- 09:24:10 [[TeSeO]]
- conferences...
- 09:24:27 [[TeSeO]]
- i could put you examples in spanish
- 09:24:31 [keschte]
- whew, hma takes out the big guns :)
- 09:24:39 [[TeSeO]]
- with spanish keywords
- 09:24:43 [[TeSeO]]
- and you lsee how my sates
- 09:24:44 [[TeSeO]]
- sites
- 09:24:48 [[TeSeO]]
- are well positionated
- 09:24:49 [[TeSeO]]
- for content
- 09:24:57 [[TeSeO]]
- and 100% legal seo
- 09:25:02 [HairMetalAddict]
- Dude, learn how to put a whole sentence on one line.
- 09:25:12 [[TeSeO]]
- sorry, i will
- 09:26:16 [[TeSeO]]
- i have an spanish ajax community web sites for manual, stutorials and news. I did a seo on it and you can see how if you use the seo technics properly and being honest what you do with the content website, google will take care of you
- 09:27:06 [[TeSeO]]
- because what google wants is that the results you whant is what you get and that's what i do.
- 09:27:48 [inhouseuk]
- so basically you want to take public domain musicbrainz data and place it on a site which will be indexed by google so that you can place loads of advertising on it?
- 09:27:58 [HairMetalAddict]
- MB is best served by word-of-mouth anyway. Changing URLs just for Google, even if it would help, isn't worth the effort as (1) Google prioritizes actual content, no matter what the URL is, and (2) the point is to have permanent URLs, and that just won't happen if the current URLs are changed.
- 09:29:15 [[TeSeO]]
- inhouseuk, i asked that question already, scroll up
- 09:29:52 [[TeSeO]]
- HairMetalAddict, i dont whant to mess anything, i just was asked for indexes and stuff and i talked and gave my opinion. i think i'm not hurting anybody
- 09:33:10 [inhouseuk]
- [TeSeO]: if you are making money out of the replicated feed, you would need to enter into a license agreement http://musicbrainz.org/doc/LiveDataFeed
- 09:34:42 [nightgroove]
- i'm going out i n the rain, wish me luck
- 09:38:35 [[TeSeO]]
- inhouseuk,
- 09:38:48 [nightgroove]
- dude,
- 09:39:05 [[TeSeO]]
- inhouseuk, i did read in mb web this "For instance, if you have banner ads on your site in hopes to cover your bandwidth costs, but you don't charge for anything else on your site, we don't consider that commercial use." that is my case
- 09:39:32 [inhouseuk]
- not if your business is banner advertising!
- 09:39:56 [[TeSeO]]
- which is not my case
- 09:40:32 [nightgroove]
- nightgroove is now known as rainmo
- 09:40:37 [[TeSeO]]
- i'm not gonna be paid or earn money with what i want to do. Is just that
- 09:40:58 [[TeSeO]]
- the mb hosting is expensive for bandwith and hard disk
- 09:43:04 [inhouseuk]
- yes, but it doesn't need indexing by google presently. It wouldn't help musicbrainz by doing that
- 09:43:27 [inhouseuk]
- in fact it would make that hosting and bandwidth cost even higher
- 09:44:15 [[TeSeO]]
- i want my site be visited, if i dont place in google is because i'm stupid though
- 09:44:22 [keschte]
- rainmo: yes, and?
- 09:46:53 [HairMetalAddict]
- Where is the voting love? http://musicbrainz.org/show/edit/?editid=5278226
- 09:46:54 [HairMetalAddict]
- :-P
- 09:47:23 [HairMetalAddict]
- * HairMetalAddict hates open mods, hehehe
- 09:48:00 [inhouseuk]
- [TeSeO]: if people are interesting in the content on your site, they will find it anyway. It seems you just want a good position in google to sell advertising space or make money from banner advertising as a commercial business
- 09:49:11 [[TeSeO]]
- i think you and me have differents points of view of what people do when is searching things. Most of the people who uses google dont go forward than the second page
- 09:49:13 [keschte]
- * keschte goes to vote no on HairMetalAddict edits :)
- 09:49:26 [HairMetalAddict]
- What? All 1 of them? :-P
- 09:50:28 [keschte]
- what, you don't have any more? slacker :)
- 09:50:43 [inhouseuk]
- [TeSeO]: so why do you need a good position in google? What content is going to be on your site that people are interested in?
- 09:50:58 [[TeSeO]]
- the content of music brainz:)
- 09:51:02 [HairMetalAddict]
- Well, most of my stuff is auto-editor approved. ;-)
- 09:51:15 [[TeSeO]]
- and i wnat a good position because i wnat my website be visited for people
- 09:51:27 [[TeSeO]]
- i would not do it if i just want to place a web and nobody be there
- 09:52:45 [keschte]
- [TeSeO]: so, to cut this argument short a bit (i hope)
- 09:52:57 [keschte]
- could you imagine implementing this for mb directly?
- 09:54:03 [keschte]
- and mb hopefully will get enough cashflow in the near future to support search engines indexing the real content
- 09:54:12 [[TeSeO]]
- inhouseuk, are you being serious asking me why do i want my web with a good position in google? i think is that even if you create a website of ponneys you wish you could be the first even if you dont have google adsense
- 09:54:36 [keschte]
- no, his point is valid!
- 09:55:34 [keschte]
- its in a way direct competition on what we'd like to do.
- 09:56:33 [[TeSeO]]
- you asked me something and i gave my opnion just that
- 09:56:49 [inhouseuk]
- [TeSeO]: I'm just trying to work out why you want to do this and what benefit it has to musicbrainz
- 09:57:25 [inhouseuk]
- currently I don't see how it would benefit musicbrainz directly
- 09:59:31 [keschte]
- HairMetalAddict: regarding the note on your edit

- 23:18:18 [Keiron]

- 23:41:41 [Keiron]
- I'm prolly just not see'ing the option, but with classic I load up a directory of music it checks the songs, finds the matches from the acoustic points, and then asks me to save em
- 23:41:56 [Keiron]
- with Picard, it seems to want me to goto the website and do it by album
