- hello peoples! i have two questions about picard: 1.- is there a bom plugin? 2.- will picard rewrite all fields on a tag, or just the ones that musicbrainz uses? eg, will it wipe amarok statistics?
- 02:50:58 [gorgonzola]
- s/bom/bpm/ above
- 02:51:31 [nikki]
- 1. I don't think so, 2. depends on your settings
- 02:52:06 [kepstin]
- gorgonzola, by default it will keep tags added by other programs, as long as they don't conflict with something from the musicbrainz db
- 02:52:08 [nikki]
- if you tell it to clear the tags first, then yes it will
- 02:52:30 [nikki]
- hi kepstin!
- 02:52:43 [kepstin]
- hi nikki :)
- 02:53:06 [kepstin]
- * kepstin really should get around to finishing that japanese capitalization guide some time :)
- 02:53:15 [gorgonzola]
- nikki, kepstin thanks a lot about 2. about 1: is that because musicbrainz doesn't register bpm?
- 02:53:44 [kepstin]
- no, musicbrainz doesn't store bpm (and picard doesn't have any code to automatically calculate it)
- 02:54:23 [kepstin]
- there's been some talk about adding bpm I think, but it mostly was for a third-party using a replicated database, iirc?
- 02:55:09 [nikki]
- I think so, yes
- 02:55:14 [nikki]
- and yes, you should finish that guideline :P
- 02:55:25 [nikki]
- tell me if you need any help
- 02:55:36 [warp]
- perhaps you could query the echo nest for bpm
- 02:56:40 [gorgonzola]
- yes, i actually got recommended to look into picard by the people from libechonest
- 02:57:04 [gorgonzola]
- warp do you know how one could go about doing that?

- hi
- 11:14:51 [alexsd1]
- I recently switched to windows vista
- 11:15:07 [alexsd1]
- unfortunately picard doesn't work
- 11:15:41 [alexsd1]
- on startup it says that the "side-by-side-configuration is incorrect"
- 11:16:15 [alexsd1]
- what can i do?
- 11:17:36 [warp]
- first of all, report the bug in http://bugs.musicbrainz.org if it hasn't been reported yet.
- 11:18:10 [warp]
- i'm not sure if we have any developers with access to vista to try and reproduce the problem.
- 11:18:55 [warp]
- luks, do you have any idea what could be the cause for that error?
- 11:25:09 [alexsd1]
- okay I posted it
- 11:25:35 [alexsd1]
- 11:30:12 [KRSCuan]
- According to the error message, an error protocol should have been generated.
- 11:30:25 [KRSCuan]
- Try to locate it and attach it to the bug report.
- 11:30:34 [KRSCuan]
- Dunno the path it would be at.
- 11:32:25 [alexsd1]
- there is nothing that looks like a protocol within the application folder
- 11:33:59 [KRSCuan]
- That's to be expected. Und er Vista, programs are not supposed to write config data in their app directory.
- 11:34:23 [KRSCuan]
- It should be *somewhere* in your user directory, but I don't know where exactly.
- 11:38:14 [alexsd1]
- I cant find anything suspicious
- 11:38:31 [KRSCuan]
- Your Picard configuration file would be helpful as well, but I don't know where it's located in a Windows installation either.
- 11:39:08 [KRSCuan]
- Is this a fresh install, or did you update an existing Windows install?
- 11:40:28 [alexsd1]
- it's a fresh installation
- 11:40:55 [alexsd1]

- hello! do you guys know why the calculated track length for some mp3 files is longer than it should be. It must have something to do with the encoding of the file since WinAmp (5.1) also displays the same (wrong) track length.
- 14:29:19 [outsidecontext]
- outsidecontext has joined #musicbrainz
- 14:30:22 [lugo]
- lugo has joined #musicbrainz
- 14:30:26 [luks]
- wijaa: calculating the length of a MP3 file is a lot of guesswork, if you don't have the right headers
- 14:30:59 [luks]
- in the worst case, people do stuff like filesize/bitrate
- 14:31:27 [luks]
- you have to actually decode the file to get the correct length
- 14:31:41 [luks]
- which is why some programs add the Xing header, which includes the length
- 14:33:48 [wijaa]
- How does taglib calculate the length then?
- 14:34:29 [wijaa]
- also by dividing filesize/bitrate? Taglib seems to be quite accurate most of the times.
- 14:35:01 [luks]
- yes, if the file doesn't have the Xing header
- 14:36:16 [wijaa]
- so without Xing header and varying bitrate the guesswork can assumed to be wrong.
- 14:36:31 [luks]
- yes
- 14:36:47 [wijaa]
- good news ;) thanks, luks
- 14:37:19 [luks]
- some players even do crazy stuff like improving the guess as they play the file
- 14:37:31 [luks]
- so at the end you get the right length :)
- 14:37:40 [wijaa]
- Seems like WinAmp does that...
- 14:38:10 [wijaa]
- Is there a way to check for varying bitrate and missing Xing header in TagLib?
- 14:38:46 [luks]
- you can check for the presence of the xing header
- 14:39:08 [luks]
- MPEG::Properties::xingHeader()
- 14:39:14 [luks]
- if it returns NULL, the length is guessed
- 14:39:32 [Guest27559]
- Guest27559 has joined #musicbrainz
- 14:39:46 [wijaa]
- thanks!
- 14:40:31 [luks]
- there is also another header which can provide accurate length (VBRI), but taglib doesn't support that
- 14:40:39 [luks]
- mutagen (the library used by picard) does
- 14:41:35 [wijaa]
- ok, the bitrate for the calculation is just the bitrate of the very first header, right?
- 14:42:08 [luks]
- not sure, I'd have to check the source code
- 14:42:18 [wijaa]
- (at least in my a bit outdated version of TagLib)
- 14:42:54 [wijaa]
- nevermind. Maybe we could average over the first xy headers.
- 14:43:20 [luks]
- out of curiosity, what are you working on?
- 14:45:02 [wijaa]
