what does the AR "has show notes at" supposed to mean? and why isn't in the wiki? (as its purpose is far from obvious)

drsaunde, partial answer: relationship docs aren't in the wiki any more.
04:38:12 [CallerNo6]
the description @ http://musicbrainz.org/relationships/release-url is the same one used in the rfc. Nobody asked for clarification :-)
04:38:37 [CallerNo6]
* CallerNo6 agrees, it's not obvious
04:47:45 [drsaunde]
yikes, if we were to type website links like that and add every insignificant small category like that we would have a thousand url types
04:52:10 [CallerNo6]
I wonder if people are adding both "show notes" and "can be streamed" for the same url

Hi! At the page http://musicbrainz.org/doc/How_to_Add_Disc_IDs it says "Note: Please do not add DiscIDs from homeburnt CDs." Why not? Most of the CDs I release for example are never pressed using a glass master, just being produced on demand instead; I am also aware of several other artists who use this technique. Is there a technical reason not to add such IDs, or is this restriction just because the releases aren't really proper?
05:00:39 [kyan]
Thanks!
05:01:49 [Leftmost]
If the official release is burnt rather than pressed, it's fine. The issue is when people rip a CD, burn it, then add the DiscID from that.

this may be the dumbest question ever, but with is the MBID for Macklemore & Ryan Lewis? I'm pulling my hair out trying to find it. tx :)
09:00:40 [Guest83151]
what* (not with, geez)
09:03:38 [Freso]
Guest83151: Did you look them up in MB?
09:04:41 [Freso]
Macklemore is https://musicbrainz.org/artist/b6d7ec94-830c-44dd-b699-ce66556b7e55 - that last bit of the URL is his MBID.
09:04:55 [Freso]
Ryan Lewis you can find on your own.
09:05:11 [Freso]
They don't have a "Group" entity.
09:05:43 [Freso]
See e.g. https://musicbrainz.org/release-group/22315cdd-4ed9-427c-9492-560cf4afed58 - Macklemore and Ryan Lewis are both individually in the Artist Credit.
09:08:06 [Guest83151]
thanks freso.
09:08:59 [Freso]
Guest83151: No problem. Feel free to ask any other "dumb" questions you have too. :)

09:09:41 [Guest83151]
any reason why MBID doesn't treat them as a "group" like spotify, rdio and echonest?
09:10:04 [Guest83151]
(there are plenty more dumb questions) :-P
09:11:08 [Guest83151]
i use MBID as key ID in the database i'm using and this "group" always spit out as a rejection. i would mind so much if they were an obscure duet, but these guys are pretty darn big.
09:11:41 [Freso]
Guest83151: https://musicbrainz.org/doc/Artist_Credit
09:12:15 [Freso]
I guess for whatever reason some editor figured they fell under "Collaborations".
09:13:10 [Freso]
However, most other websites are usually not too good about splitting up names into actual artist names (or deduplicating artist names either).
09:13:26 [Guest83151]
true.
09:15:11 [Guest83151]
my problem is everyone who uses our service that searches for "macklemore & ryan lewis" gets back nothing and it reflects badly. i dont think they are interested in how they are classified in MB, they just want to listen to their music. can i create them a MBID or will I be shot for mucking up the system?
09:15:54 [Freso]
Guest83151: You should probably update your system to handle Artist Credits...
09:17:23 [Guest83151]
i'll take a look at it. thanks Freso.
09:17:45 [Freso]
Guest83151: Btw, stick around for a bit.
09:18:01 [Freso]
Guest83151: I'm trying to look up some history to see if they were once one Group artist.
09:19:01 [Guest83151]
ok, will do! thx. i just need an MBID for these guys, will save me several thousand $ getting the developers to redesign the system.
09:19:05 [Freso]
I may end up deciding to make a new Group artist again, which would alleviate your pain for this one case. But you should still really handle Artist Credits, as there will be other cases.
09:19:56 [Guest83151]
true, i've found a few, but nothing quite like these guys - they seem to be pretty hot this last year.
09:20:17 [Freso]
Guest83151: Artist credits are not exactly a new thing in MB anymore. Unless your system is 5+ years old, it really should have been part of the spec from the get-go. :/
09:20:44 [Guest83151]
true. I will have the architect taken out back and beaten. :)
09:20:49 [Freso]
Guest83151: And who's to say who'll blow up this year? Next year?
09:21:36 [Guest83151]
on a side note, at SXSW last month i had a bunch of artists ask me why they couldn't be found in our system. "Tuan X" comes to mind.
09:22:01 [Guest83151]
is there a graceful way for us to contribute data on an artists behalf?
09:22:48 [Guest83151]
(no kidding! michael jackson & paul mccartney, bowie & queen, macklemore... every year, someone new)
09:23:09 [Freso]
Well, we're always open for more editors. :)
09:23:59 [Freso]
There are a number of labels and individual artists (or people related to artists somehow) working on their own things in the database.
09:24:06 [Freso]
We're not Wikipedia. :)
09:26:14 [Guest83151]
oh good. is there an API for automating that? i'm happy to get a developer to look at the missing artists we've spotted and uploading content that we are allowed to share.
09:26:49 [Freso]
No. :(

09:27:33 [Freso]
If you have some kind of feed, ianmcorvidae would be happy (he better be, anyway! :p) to add it to Geordi.
09:28:09 [Freso]
There are some bots (at least one in Python and one in Perl) floating around to automate the process somewhat.
09:28:54 [Freso]
And an "editable WS" is high on the wishlist, but it also seems to be tied up to "ws/3", so still a little ways off.
09:30:14 [Freso]
https://musicbrainz.org/edit/15033652
09:30:16 [Guest83151]
our guys are fluent in Perl, that could be an option. do you have a link i can get them to look at by any chance?
09:31:07 [Freso]
Looks like the first "Macklemore & Ryan Lewis" artist credits simply pointed to Macklemore and ignore Lewis entirely.
09:31:47 [Guest83151]
poor lewis! :)
09:31:48 [Freso]
Guest83151: Hold on. I'll try to see if I can dig it up.
09:31:54 [Guest83151]
cheers
09:32:14 [Freso]
Anyway. I'll ask about popular opinion in the channel when more of the "regulars" seem to be around.
09:32:42 [Freso]
Right now is a bit of a "dead zone" since US'ians are in bed and it's still AM for (most) Europeans.
09:33:20 [Guest83151]
yeah, just crazy aussies awake at this time. :)
09:33:31 [Freso]
And we don't have that many Australians or people in the UTC+ timezones. :(
09:35:35 [Freso]
I think https://github.com/96187/musicbrainz-bot is to go-to Perl bot. You may want to look at its fork family, as some of them may have some changes that make whatever you want to do easier.
09:36:07 [Freso]
Also, be sure to test out the bot on a test server before running it on the main server, or you may end up with a bunch of bad edits you'll have to clean up... :|
09:37:03 [Freso]
(I'm not sure if test.musicbrainz.org is up these days, but if not, just ask here, and I'm sure someone will be happy to lend an mbsandbox account to help you if you don't have a test server running yourself)
09:39:41 [Guest83151]
we've got our own box we can test it on. once its working well, i'll post here and figure our best way to get this working for others to enjoy.
09:41:02 [Freso]
* Freso nods
09:41:18 [Freso]
You can also fork the bot, of course, so you can publish your own changes/additions to it. :)

13:23:00 [Freso]
Should "Macklemore & Ryan Lewis" be an artist in its/their own right?
13:23:10 [Freso]
https://musicbrainz.org/artist/b6d7ec94-830c-44dd-b699-ce66556b7e55 definitely has the AC's to justify it.

hmm - joy. All tracks mastered by X at Z, except tracks 10 & 12 by Y at Z. While I can see how it doesn't make sense for tracks on one release to have been mastered in different studios, this does seem like a possibility that MB no longer allows: that not the entire album is mastered by the same engineer. Seems a shame that an annotation is needed for info that used to be possible to add as AR.
15:36:46 [Zastai]
I hate this release already - "Track 13: X: all vocals; Y: all instruments". So specific!
15:39:46 [Freso]
:)

I have a RG where I added a CD version next to a digital media version. Looking in the edit history I see that the digital one was intended as an entry for the CD, but just entered with wrong medium type. Should I merge it into mine (will that keep my "CD" type?), or just enter a deletion (it doesn't include info that my entry doesn't also include)?
15:47:55 [Freso]
Link?
15:48:04 [Zastai]
There also seems to be a delay in the main site's pages - some edits to recordings show up in edit history just fine but are not reflected in the recording's main page. Am on hotel wifi so could be some over-eager proxy I suppose.

17:27:34 [Freso]
The month as well.
17:27:50 [Freso]
In fact...
17:27:57 [Freso]
It looks like the date is mangled.
17:28:20 [Freso]
day: 14; month: .2; year: 15.0
17:28:37 [Freso]
Was probably 15.02.14
17:28:45 [Freso]
As in 15th of Feb 2014.
17:29:15 [chirlu`]
Perhaps the tagger expects “2014-02-15”?
17:29:29 [Freso]
omgyja: I don't know how Jaikoz works, but fixing the date in your metadata should remove the error on submission.

On the booklet there is a track title "Indiana (Take 2)". How should I deal with the addition "(Take 2)" in Musicbrainz?
19:59:49 [Freso]
mki: https://wiki.musicbrainz.org/Style/Titles/Extra_title_information
20:00:17 [Freso]
So basically, just leave it as it is on the booklet.
20:03:11 [mki]
ok thanks
20:07:31 [CatQuest]

For the associated recording, shouldn't the "(Take 2)" move to the disambiguation comment? Generally, I mean.

20:23:09 [mki]
so leave the release date empty if i only have the copyright year?
20:23:15 [Freso]
mki: Not really. It's better to have no release date than a wrong one.
20:23:17 [Freso]
Yeah.
20:23:22 [mki]
ok
20:23:42 [Shepard]
the theme of today seems to be: there's a wiki page with an answer for everything.
20:23:44 [Freso]
However, if the copyright year is 2014, the release year is 99% certainly also 2014... :p
20:24:05 [mki]
true...
20:25:23 [Freso]
(For anyone reading the logs in the future: the above advice may not still hold true.)
20:28:20 [CallerNo6]
hey, future-people-who-are-reading-this: I wonder if you have circa dates yet. If you do, copyright date is probably close enough for initial releases.
20:32:48 [mki]
I just entered a multi-CD album starting from the discid of the first CD. How do I add the discids of the other CDs now?
20:34:14 [Shepard]
when you look the CD up you can... wait, there has to be a wiki page for that :)
20:35:01 [Shepard]
* Shepard actually remembers writing a "how to add disc ids" which must be utterly out of date by now
20:35:17 [mki]
my problem is that the newly created album doesn't show up when I start from the discid of the 2nd CD
20:35:42 [Shepard]
it probably tries an indexed search and the index hasn't updated yet
20:35:52 [Shepard]
see if you can switch to a direct search anywhere
20:36:32 [mki]
I start from: http://musicbrainz.org/cdtoc/attach?toc=1+18+237855+150+11361+24419+37169+49824+60822+72589+84641+96906+110935+125237+136732+150856+165584+179661+194780+209271+223419
